Track Name: This Damn Guitar
this damn guitar
music & lyrics by jay brannan

i said all that i had to say
and i believe in what i’ve done
i sang all that i had to sing
now all the work is done

rode into town upon a lonely star
floated away into a maple tree
love is the aim no matter where you are
but that’s not all there is to see

there is a piece of me in bethlehem
there is a piece of me in rome
there is an angel in the bedroom
who patiently waits to bring me home

when i’ve said all that i had to say
and i’ve saddled up that lonely star
i’ve played all that i had to play
and i’m gonna burn this damn guitar

Track Name: Imperfect Lover
imperfect lover
music & lyrics by jay brannan

i saw red and i saw black
i pushed the colors back
i am only a man
i’ve done the best that i can

the beast of vulnerability
inches evilly towards me
thumbing an ebook in the laundromat alone
hearing the soap ripping shirts from your cologne
i don’t mind you only talk about yourself
i like to hear those i’s

i am a lonely wanderer
you are a holy conjurer
and i wanna take your hand

[chorus:]
there is a version of me
able to love so fearlessly
but you’re authoring dramas
and crediting the script to me
we all shake the hand life deals us
even days it hurts us, and odd days heals us
so i’m a mix of jack & joker
maybe you’ll find the perfect hand to be
played imperfectly

knew so much about myself
beyond all hope, beyond all help
a funny warrior, i’m not brave, just tall
i need a circle around me that’s small
kick the machine that you pay for your mistakes
‘cuz change is all it takes

i am a hopeful traveler
you a highway unraveler
and i wanna be your man

[chorus]

i can never be a perfect lover

could you ever love such an imperfect lover?

Track Name: New York, New York
new york, new york
music & lyrics by jay brannan

there is a man in the hallway
repeatedly screaming “put the knife down”
i hear rats in the ceiling
like herds of cracked-out gazelles bouncing around

this was a really good weekend
only 1 fire on my floor
so i camped out on a park bench
relaxing & wondering what all the honking is for

new york, new york
beautiful beautiful beautiful crazy new york

i’m trying out this new app “Ok-Plenty-Gr-Inder”
it’s like the MySpace for love but no one replies
perhaps there’s hope in the headlines — nope
the Times is reporting a deadly bed bug that flies

this is the last year
i spend eating my way through winter here
drop the tortilla chip, buy a nice gym membership
for the low, low price of an arm, a leg, and an ear

ny ny ny…

Portland handles all of Brooklyn’s spillage
Chase Bank owns all of the buildings in the East Village
beautiful parks that you pass barricade all the parts with grass
and the subway’s the star of a film called “Overfillage”

i need a real job
i need a real life plan
i need a tranquilizer and hand sanitizer
i need a cigarette or a man

ny ny ny…

Track Name: Desert Rose
desert rose
music & lyrics by jay brannan

25 years in this dusty city
no one told her she was pretty
never felt love except for wine

cast aside like a dark angel
and every man who offers change'll
fire her a shot for every line

using tricks of the trade
to bury mistakes she's made
desert rose is
in the shadow of the eden tree
tasting passionately
desert rose is gone

does this lock come with a key
or combinationally
will freedom simply come with time

can't seem to get any rest
from the scar letter on her chest
will she ever feel beautiful or fine

all of her dreams betrayed
the promises she's made
desert rose is
burning up in this town
no savior's comin ‘round
desert rose is gone

waking up when the night is calling
going down like an angel falling
from an ivory tower to a cheap motel room
in a different land down under where pain is rain and rage goes thundering across a blood red sky
she's watching the storm and wondering why
she's petrified, grey skied, swollen eyed, terrified

using tricks of the trade
to bury mistakes she's made
desert rose is
in the shadow of the eden tree
tasting passionately
desert rose is
all of her dreams betrayed
the promises she's made
desert rose is
burning up in this town
no savior's comin ‘round
desert rose is gone

Track Name: J.J. the Baker
j.j. the baker
music & lyrics by jay brannan

i buy the flour
i buy the pan
i rent the storefront
and i pay the man

i’m j.j. the baker
bread’s all that i can
do for a living
bread’s all that i am

there’s a market on main street
mr. mason’s mandarin marmalade’s
a magnificent match for my muffins
midriffs and memories are made

mrs. jones likes my pastries
she comes by for a case
with her granddaughter jenny
and they leave with smiles on their face

i’m jj the baker…

now the sun’s setting sooner
times and its people are tough
no more market on main street
the marmalade business is rough

i see people are hungry
i still bake what i can
they want bread more than ever now
but i’m low on flour and pans

i’m jj the baker…

there’s a mob at my window
i recognize some outstretched hands
“we want pastries & muffins
any real baker would understand

you should feed us for free now
we can break bread any place
jj you should feel lucky
just to witness the smiles on our face”

i’m jj the baker…

i’m fresh out of flour
i’m all out of pans
i don’t have any store front
i don’t have any plans

now i don’t want your pity
i baked more than i thought that i could
but those years at the bakery
those years they tasted so good
